stone mountain state park.
It was a beautiful 70 degree Sunday in the middle of February, and of course we went hiking. Caroline the dog was pumped and excited, jumped in the Subaru and we headed off. It was less than an hour drive from Winston Salem to Stone Mountain and we already knew the trail we wanted to hike. The Widow's Creek Trail (2.5M), which actually loops into the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail (6M).
Here's a PARK MAP for details :) .
The trail ends at the top of a huge hill where backpack camping is allowed and boy, it's a hike. It is honestly a very serious strenuous hike, as ALL of the trails at Stone Mountain are. The campsites looked great, with fire pits built and a couple of rock chairs.
Along the way, a river flowed to our side with nice moss covered rocks, mushrooms and beautiful Canadian Hemlock trees.
We absolutely loved the hike and the views. Caroline didn't complain too much about it either. For all other information on Stone Mountain State Park, visit the website here: http://www.ncparks.gov/stone-mountain-state-park.
